HoloSapiens - the TCM "Food as Medicine" Project

The urinary bladder receives wastes and extra water which flow to the bladder through tubes called ureters. The bladder stores the urine until releasing it through urination. Thus the urinary bladder’s function is to collect, contain, and excrete urine.

In traditional Chinese medicine the Urinary Bladder is the partner organ of the Kidney. Both the Urinary Bladder and the Kidney are element Water. As such they have close relationship with the water metabolism of the body.  Therefore both (especially the Urinary Bladder) are particularly sensitive to external damp climate conditions.  Living in damp environments leads to the internal accumulation of “damp-heat” or “damp-cold” in the Urinary Bladder, which  both manifest in difficult urination.

Fear is the emotion of the Kidney. Thus its partner organ - the Urinary Bladder - is susceptible to excessive sudden or chronic fear. Therefore, especially in children, chronic fear, insecurity or anxiety weakens the Qi of the Urinary Bladder and leads to night bed-wetting (nocturnal enuresis).

Excessive sexual activity depletes Kidney Qi, which may manifest through its partner organ in frequent and copious urination, night time urination (nocturia) and/or incontinence.
